Storm Xynthia Causes Widespread Damage in France, Spain and Portugal

Atlantic storm Xynthia smashed into the western coasts of France, Portugal and Spain on Sunday February 28, 2010. France has declared a national disaster, with the worst affected areas being the Vendee and Charente-Maritime regions on the western coast. French radio reported wind speeds of 175km/h at the top of the Eiffel Tower.  Widespread damage was also seen in Spain and Portugal, including Madeira. At least 50 lives have been claimed in Europe due to Xynthia, and damage to private and commercial property is extensive.
